HSE Updates Week of 3 May 2023 – RAE, MHCC, CQN, ESC/COAA

  • H&S Bulletin: Answer due by 8am Friday 26 May 2023
  • Health and Safety Committee: Next Meeting: Thursday 25 May 2023 at 1pm
    • If you can’t join the HSC meetings,  you can still participate by providing feedback, questions, or concerns to hsc@raeengineering.ca. Please submit feedback prior to the next meeting so it can be brought forward.
    • The HSC meets the last Thursday of each month at 1pm via Teams
    • HSC Meeting Minutes can be found in the Teams Channel and SiteDocs
  • Hazard Reporting: Due by end of each month
    • Once a month, submit at least 1 hazard ID, incident, accident, or near miss to hazardreporting@raeengineering.ca to demonstrate your commitment to thinking about safety
    • Non-work-related incidents count as well, just indicate that it was not work-related in the subject.
  • Safety Rewards Program: Where your commitment to RAE’s Safety Culture is rewarded!

  • Client Orientations: A master list of client orientations made known to RAE Safety are compiled in Acumatica Doc RAE000020-Client Site Requirements and Orientations Tracker which is updated as orientations are made known.

 Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC)

  • The latest issue of The Catalyst | Le Vecteur has been issued with for conversations on mental health including:
    • A Name and a Face: Mental illness, homelessness, and a family’s years-long search for their lost brother.
    • The Dread in Your Head: It’s also around you: storms, fires, catastrophe — the intersections between climate and mental health — and what you can do about it.
    • Why We Use “Substance Use Health”: Putting substance use on a spectrum creates a space for more open conversations about safer, healthier, more manageable consumption.
    • Seeing People, Not Problems: How compassionate health care can alter the trajectories of people who use substances.

CQNetwork

  • CQN has issued Mental Health in High-Risk Industries which contains information and recommendations regarding:
    • Mental Health Week (1-7 May 2023):sponsored by Canadian Mental Health Associated, there will be several events and activities as well as recommendations
    • Mental Health in High-Risk Industries: significant demands on workers’ physical and mental health which may contribute to depression and anxiety, substance abuse, PTSD, sleep disorders, and burnout
    • Stigma: stigma surrounding anxiety, depression, and other conditions which may negatively affect mental health
    • Burnout: symptoms, self-care, prevention from employers

Energy Safety Canada (ESC) and Construction Owners Association of Alberta (COAA)

  • The Canadian Model for Providing a Safe Workplace (the Canadian Model) is a Best Practice Alcohol and Drug Policy that stakeholders in the Canadian construction, maintenance and oil and gas industries can adopt and follow. The purpose of the Canadian Model is to ensure a safe workplace for all workers by reducing the risks associated with the inappropriate use of alcohol and drugs.
    • As part of the five-year review cycle of the Canadian Model for Providing a Safe Workplace (The Canadian Model), two amendments to Sections 3.2 and 4.8 were identified and approved by the COAA Board of Directors and the ESC Executive Team. Effective May 1, 2023, COAA and ESC approve the use of the amendments under the revised Canadian Model Version 6.1.
