  • Company Safety Meeting Presentation:   deadline: second Friday of each month for the previous month (8 Sept 2023)
    • If you have not already done so by the deadline, please review the attached Company Safety Meeting on SiteDocs to indicate you have reviewed it. If the deadline has passed – you missed it, but are still expected to review the presentation.

    • If you can’t join the HSC meetings,  you can still participate by providing feedback, questions, or concerns to hsc@raeengineering.ca. Please submit feedback prior to the next meeting so it can be brought forward.

Energy Safety Canada (ESC)

  • Via email: NEW | Video Re-creation of Confined Space Triple-Fatality Incident
    • On November 15, 2018, three workers in Leduc, Alberta, were fatally injured due to nitrogen gas exposure in a confined space.
    • Through Creative Sentencing with Alberta OHS, Energy Safety Canada has launched a 3D-animated re-creation video portraying the events that led to the incident. This video highlights critical controls required for working with confined spaces and hazardous asphyxiants.
    • Watch the video at your workplace and use the accompanying Facilitation Guide and example Bowtie Analysis to identify how this incident occurred and what safeguards are missing at your worksite that could lead to a similar tragedy.

    • Join the DROPS Canadian Chapter: Dropped objects are a leading cause of incidents related to working at height activities. Leading the education and awareness of elevated work hazards within Canada’s energy industry, the DROPS Canadian Chapter was created in partnership with the Global DROPS body. This group offers a local platform to discuss, collaborate and brainstorm common solutions to this common hazard.
      • We invite you and your organization to join the DROPS Canadian Chapter in this educational journey as we offer a helping hand to those struggling against this shared hazard.

    • New Resources from Alberta OHS: Alberta OHS has released a new resource through its OHS Resource Portal. The Report Workplace Health and Safety Incidents poster informs workers on reporting workplace health and safety incidents to Alberta OHS.

    • Energy Safety Canada is excited to announce changes to the Special Oilfield program. These modifications better align the course with industry requirements and provide a more flexible learning experience for workers.
    • What is Changing:
      • Classroom Delivery and Course Manual Discontinued: The Special Oilfield Boilers classroom course is now replaced by Special Oilwell Operator online and the Special Oilfield Boilers Course Manual is no longer available for purchase.
      • Self-Study Online Course: Participants study at their own pace and convenience.
      • Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA) Exam Scheduling: Employers/students are responsible for scheduling the ABSA exam directly through ABSA.
      • Aligned to Industry Requirements: Revamped course content better aligns with the latest industry requirements for Special Oilwell Operators.

    • Do you want to take your safety journey to the next level? Are you interested in learning about Human and Organizational Performance (HOP)? Energy Safety Canada is pleased to offer a 10-week virtual HOP workshop starting on Monday, October 2.
    • The workshop is designed for individuals who are ready to take their safety journey to the next level. You’ll delve deeper into the principles and practices of HOP, gain practical experience through interactive exercises, and explore real-world case studies that illustrate the power of HOP.
      • Weekly 1.5 hour facilitator-led sessions over a 10-week virtual workshop
      • Sessions run weekly Oct 2-Dec 7

Technical Safety BC (TSBC)

  • Via email: Important Update: Changes to Gas Safety Regulations Effective October 1, 2023
    • Important changes regarding Gas Safety Regulations will be effective as of October 1, 2023 as outlined in Information Bulletin: Gas Safety Regulation Amendments and Adopted Code Revisions.
    • Starting on this date, amendments specified in Appendix 2 of the Ministerial Order M 191 will come into effect. These changes affect Section 3 of the Gas Safety Regulation, regarding the exemption for internal combustion engines, turbines, and prime movers.
    •  This exemption will now exclusively apply only to stationary engines, turbines, and prime movers that have been approved under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
    • What you need to know:
      • All stationary engines, turbines, and prime movers under the Safety Standards Act will be required to display a certification or approval mark in accordance with Directive: Certification and approval marks for gas appliances in BC 
      • Any regulated equipment lacking a certification or approval mark will no longer be eligible for sale or installation
      • This change is not being applied retroactively. Work performed under permits obtained prior to October 1, 2023 will not be affected
      • Permits taken out after October 1, 2023 will be required to list the stationary engine, turbine or prime mover as an appliance
    • If you have any questions or concerns about these upcoming regulatory changes and how they may affect your operations, please do not hesitate to reach out to TSBC.
  • Via Email: Fee changes in effect on January 1
      • New Fee Schedule: Upcoming fee changes will come into effect 1 January 2024. Most fees will increase by 7%, other changes include:
        • charging the same fee across all technologies for certification exams, with cost dependent on format of exam delivery (paper, digital remote, digital in-person, or practical); and
        • charging the same hourly rates across all technologies for administrative, professional, and safety services.
